This George the Farmer Educational Resource aims to raise awareness about Australian wool — where it comes from, how it is produced and processed, its unique properties, and the many ways this incredible natural fibre is used.

Australia is renowned around the world for producing high-quality wool, particularly fine Merino wool. Wool is a natural, renewable and biodegradable fibre grown by sheep, with Australian wool travelling around the globe to be transformed into clothing, textiles and a growing range of innovative products.

Students are introduced to the journey of wool from farm to finished product, exploring sheep and shearing, the different stages of wool processing, the properties of wool, spinning, wool products and Australia's place in the global wool industry.

This FREE curriculum-aligned educators' guide has been developed for Foundation – Year 4 students, with some activities also suitable for early childhood education settings. Teachers are encouraged to modify and adapt the activities to suit the learning needs of their students.

The resource includes eight engaging learning activities, covering:

  • Reader's Workshop using George the Farmer Shears a Sheep
  • From Gate to Garment
  • Wool Spa Day
  • Features of Australian Wool
  • Explore the Science of Spinning
  • Wool Detective
  • Australian Wool Travels the Globe
  • Invent a New Wool Product

The activities encourage students to explore wool through literacy, science, geography, design and technologies, sustainability, investigation and creative problem-solving.

The resource has been designed to complement the George the Farmer Shears a Sheep book, George the Farmer “Wool from Sheep” video and the original song “Mate Where's My Next Sheep”, helping teachers bring the journey of Australian wool to life in the classroom.

The activities can be used individually or together as part of a broader unit of learning about wool, agriculture, natural fibres and the journey of products from farm to consumer.

Activity pages can be printed for students, displayed on an interactive whiteboard, or incorporated into your school's online teaching and learning environment.
